Shirley Stone-Akers

On July 21, 2022 God filled his bouquet with his beautiful flower Shirley L Stone Akers age 88 with her loving family by her side. She was born April 16, 1934 in Mayhill, NM to Lowell William Cady and Arta Joy Cady.

Shirley graduated from high school in 1952 and married her high school sweetheart Jimmy R Stone. From this union was born Rita Stone, Gary Stone, Steven Stone, and Robin (Stone) Pruiett. Shirley and Jimmy made their home in the Sacramento Mountains where they owned and operated a ranching business until Jimmy’s passing in 1977. She then married Noel M Akers and continued the business until Noel’s passing in December of 2021. She served as the Weed postmistress until her retirement. Shirley and Noel also owned the Weed Café for many years.

Her passion in life was music. She was an extremely talented musician who could play any instrument with strings or keys, especially the piano. She also participated in and won many fiddling contests. Her greatest joy was playing music in her church, the Weed Baptist Church and entertaining at the Weed Café as well as many other venues. She was a devout Christian and dedicated her life to the Lord.

Shirley was preceded in death by her father Lowell Willam Cady and mother Arta Joy Cady, her first husband Jimmy R Stone, her second husband Noel M Akers, brother RL Cady and brother in law Ernest Stone.

She is survived by her two sons Gary (Debbie) Stone, Steve (Gloria) Stone and her two daughters Rita Stone and Robin (Perry) Pruiett. By her 10 grandchildren Lynn (Randy) Melton, Shanna (James) Waitt, Jammie (Will) Stevens, Jimmy (Rana) Stone, Jennifer (Robert) Herbert, Keri Stone, Cherrie (Daren) Medina, Christina Stone, Fawna (Lacy) Miller, Kacey Pruiett and 19 great grandchildren, who were the sparkle of her eye. By her two brothers Preston (Delores) Cady, Norman (June) Cady and her two sisters Helen Stone and Beverly (Joe) Ward. And all her beloved nieces and nephews. Also, by close friend Cheryl Petree and her little dog Chance.

The family will greet friends at a viewing on Tuesday July 26, 2022 at the Scenic Chapel in Alamogordo, NM from 5pm to 7pm. The funeral service will be conducted at the Weed Community Center in Weed, NM at 10:30am on Wednesday July 27, 2022 with Brother Galen Isaacs officiating. Burial will follow at Lusk Cemetery in Weed, NM. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Weed Baptist Church or the Weed Community Center.

The Stone family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services.
