Sandra Slater

Sandra Sue Cothern Slater, 77, of Alamogordo, NM, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at her home after a courageous three-year battle with brain cancer.  She was surrounded by her loving family.  
 
She was preceded in death by her sisters Janet Hall and Carolyn Salas.  She is survived by her husband, Robert Slater; son Kenneth Slater and his wife Lindsey; grandchildren Kolbie and Brooke Slater; step-grandchildren Nathan and Gracie Morales; her brother Howard Cothern and twin brother Steve Cothern.  She is lovingly remembered by her family and friends.    
 
Sandra was the daughter of Wilford Cothern and Melodese (Thomas) Cothern.  She was one of five children:  Howard Cothern, Carolyn Salas, Steve Cothern, and Janet Hall.   
 
Born in Las Cruces, NM, in 1945, she graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1964.  In 1967, she married Robert Slater of Alamogordo, NM, and raised their son Kenneth Slater.  
 
Sandra has a long history with the Rotary Club of Alamogordo whose mission is to eradicate polio.  This passion to help others was influenced by her late sister, Carolyn Salas, who was stricken with polio at a young age.  Through her leadership, Sandra served numerous times as president to ensure the club’s goals were met.  
 
Over the years, her commitment to the community continued when Sandra joined the Alamogordo Elks Lodge #1897.  As a member, Sandra served in several leadership roles to ensure the continued investment in the Alamogordo community.  
 
Sandra had a long career in helping others.  After 38 years of service, she retired from PNM - Public Service Company of New Mexico in 2007.   
 
Sandra was respected and admired by those who knew her.  She devoted much time to her sister Janet Hall and Carolyn Salas who proceeded her in death.  She was a mentor who was always willing to help others, and a leader who was able to get things done.  
 
She was loved by all.  
 
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in honor of Sandra Slater to Rotary International or the Glioblastoma Foundation for Cancer Research.    
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 28th, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Scenic Chapel, 1334 N Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, NM, 88310.  
 
The Slater family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services.
