Kristin Hakanson

Kristin Lynne (Kirk) Hakanson, 79, passed away on December 9, 2022, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Kristin was born on August 17, 1943, in Saint Louis, Missouri to Carter and Marjory (Henning) Kirk.

Kristin lived in Saint Louis and Washington, DC, but spent the majority of her childhood in Albuquerque. Kristin graduated from Highland High School in Albuquerque, and from there attended the University of New Mexico. While there, Kristin met John Hakanson and they were married in December of 1965. Kristin graduated from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s degree in history. She and John moved to Deming where they were blessed with the adoption of her sons, Chip and Eric. While in Deming, Kris earned her master’s degree from Western New Mexico University. The family then moved to Kansas where John was attending law school, and she was a devoted mother to her family, as well as teaching high school English while there. Upon John’s graduation, the family moved to Alamogordo, where Kristin taught at Alamogordo High School for a number of years, before retiring from the teaching profession.

Kristin loved to spend time with friends, attend bible study, play bridge and work with her PEO group.  Kristin also enjoyed traveling throughout her life and was able to visit many countries and places of interest to her and John. Kristin attended Grace United Methodist Church and served on various boards. 

Kristin is survived by her son Chip (John) and his wife Darla, her son Eric, grandsons Carter and Seth, and sister Anita Achay.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Hakanson, father, Carter W. Kirk, and mother, Marjory R. Kirk

 A memorial service will be held for Kristin at Grace United Methodist Church on Monday, January 9, 2022, at 10:00 am. 

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made in Kristin’s name to the Parkinson’s Foundation, American Diabetes Association or to the charity or organization of your choice.

The family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Scenic Chapel to direct the services.
