Joseph Bouma Obituary

Isaiah 40:31

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Our hearts are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Joseph C. Bouma, 67, in his home surrounded by loved ones on August 28th, 2024, after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. Born in Alamogordo, NM on April 28th, 1957, Joe was a shining light of strength and compassion to all. Joe was a devout follower of Christ and was actively involved in the Christadelphian faith. He leaves behind a community of friends and fellow believers from all over the country.

Following in the footsteps of his hardworking lineage, Joe mastered the trade of drywall and painting from his father, Herbert. He began working alongside his father in the family business, Superior Drywall, starting in high school. In his 30’s, Joe started his own drywall business, Joe Bouma Construction, providing for his loved ones through his hard work. A man of his word, Joe made an impact on many in the local construction industry. Later, he furthered his skillset and business by building quality, custom homes in the Alamogordo area until his retirement.

A man of many talents, Joe learned to play the fiddle from his father and grandfather and amazed others with his ability to play with other musicians and pick up new songs by ear. Joe also enjoyed spending time with his friends and traveling for competitive shooting matches. A skillful marksman, Joe shared a love of hunting and outdoorsmanship with many in his life.

Joe was a devoted husband and provider. Together, he and his wife Judy celebrated their thirty-eighth wedding anniversary this summer. He is survived by his wife Judy, daughters Sarah Bouma and Katie Mena (Jonathan), as well as his sister LeAnn, brother John (Marie), brother Harry, and many loving nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother, Herbert and Betty Jo Bouma.

Altruistic by nature, Joe’s words of advice were to “do something nice for somebody today, but don’t tell anyone about it.”

Visitation will begin at 9am followed by a service at 9:30am at Alamogordo Funeral Home on Friday September 6th, 2024. A graveside service will follow at Parker Cemetery near Mayhill, NM. Details about the location of the reception in Alamogordo will be provided at the service. The pallbearers will be Matthew, David, Stephen, and Adam Bouma, Warren Kimmel II, Warren Kimmel III, Jonathan Mena, and Jerry Weaver, accompanied by honorary pallbearers Ed Brown and Don Bednorz. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Joe if friends should desire, the family asks that donations be made to Alamogordo Home Health Care and Hospice. The Bouma family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel for funeral services.
