Johanne VanAtta Obituary

Johanne VanAtta, 92, passed away November 30th, 2023 in Roswell, New Mexico surrounded by her family.

Johanne was born as Joan Elaine Harding, November 24, 1931 in Los Angeles, California.  She was preceded in death by her only brother, John Gottlieb of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Johanne worked hard her whole life.  She spent a number of years as a farm laborer in Tulelake, California.  Later she was employed as a telephone operator in Merrill, Oregon.  She remained in that career, moving up into management, until she retired.  She lived and worked where her job took her including Sheridan, Oregon; Sunnyside, Washington; Hood River, Oregon and Rio Vista, California.

Johanne retired from the telephone company where she lost her late husband, Frank VanAtta in 1988.

Beginning in 1988 Johanne traveled and lived in various small towns where her children lived, including Adak and Fairbanks, Alaska.  She often lived in an RV and enjoyed meeting new people everywhere she went.  She managed several RV parks in her travels, a favorite being in Brookings, Oregon.

Johanne's adventures brought her to Alamogordo, New Mexico where her son was then working for Baja Cable.  Johanne enjoyed the weather and the small town, and so remained in the area after her son moved on.  Soon she was joined by her daughter and son-in-law, Dave and Kathie Weaver, when they retired from their jobs in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Johanne's hobbies included painting and writing.  She wrote several short stories with the hope of publication.  Her paintings were always of landscapes and places she loved.  A stray cat or dog often found a home with Johanne.  Pets brightened her days and provided company and amusement.

Johanne is survived by her two sons, Timothy and Daniel Guthrie of Willamina, Oregon and her daughter, Kathie Weaver of Alamogordo. Johanne's six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren are scattered about the United States.

Johanne loved her Lord and served Him for many years.  Her reunion with Him was longed for and we know she is at peace with Jesus.
