JOAN ELIZABETH HIGGINS (84)
Joan Higgins of Alamogordo, NM, died Sunday, December 17, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society (Betty Dare) Nursing Home. She was 84 years young.
She was born on July 3, 1933 in Hawley, PA, to Helene and Edward Miller. After graduating high school she went on to nursing school near Buffalo, NY, where she met Francis Higgins, whom she married on September 25, 1954. In 1955, their first of three (3) children was born, Theresa, and they moved to Newark, DE with a new job. While raising two more children, Karen (1957) and Stephen (1962) she became active in their local church, and teaching 4H. She always loved music, often playing piano and singing in the choir, as well as going to concerts. She enjoyed baking, especially her famous Swiss chocolate squares. She loved traveling to see other places and people, which is where she got the camping bug. In 1999, they moved to Alamogordo, NM staying active in the community by volunteering at church, participating in Senior Center events, and delivering Meal on Wheels.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis Higgins (2000) as well as her daughter, Theresa Short (2010). Survivors include her daughter Karen (Dan) Neil, of Newark, DE, and son Stephen (Teresa) Higgins of Longmont, CO. She also is survived by six (6) grandchildren, Carla Wertz; Nicolas and Dylan Short; Mark and Randall Neil; and Matthew Higgins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 @ 11:00 AM, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1212 Washington St., Alamogordo, NM with Pastor Kristi Koppel officiating. A lunch will be provided in the fellowship hall at Our Savior Lutheran Church immediately following.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
