Frederick (Fritz) Halbert, age 75, passed away at home on November 29, 2017. He was born on January 25, 1942 in Bay City, Michigan to Charles John and Elizabeth M. (Thompson) Halbert.
Fritz graduated high school from the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia in 1960, and went on the serve 20 years in the US Air Force. He spent 4 terms in Vietnam flying with the Jolly Greens, and later served as a flight engineer on the C-130's until his retirement in 1983. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, as well as many other medals and awards. Fritz was very proud of his military service, and he always considered himself a flyboy at heart and his Air Force career was his glory days. He worked a few other jobs after leaving the military but never started a second career. He completely retired by the age of 55.
After retirement Fritz left Georgia in his RV and went to California before coming to New Mexico where he met his wife Carol. Together, they traveled in their RV around the United States and into the Baja of California, before settling down in High Rolls, NM.
Fritz had two previous marriages which resulted in his four children. He and his first wife, Julie, had three children, two sons and one daughter. He and his second wife, Alma, had one son together.
Fritz is survived by his wife Carol, his three sons Frederick Jr., Dan, and Chris (Jen), and one daughter Laurie, one stepson David (Heather), his brother Eric (Karen), and seven grand-children. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one brother Jeff.
A graveside service will be held at the Ft. Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, December 12, at 11:00am.
