Elise Haley

Elise Haley, born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on September 15, 1946 passed away on July 29, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of compassion, education, music, and creativity that touched countless lives.

A gifted pianist, Elise was one of only a few in New Mexico to receive the prestigious Paderewski Medal.  Her passion for music led her to pursue piano performance through postgraduate studies in both New Mexico and New Jersey.  She graduated from Carlsbad High in School in 1964 and proudly attended her 60th class reunion.  Elise went on to earn her BA in math and music from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, followed by a master's degree in math and music education.

Her career was as diverse as it as impactful.  Elise taught school in Odessa, TX and Westfield, NJ and worked for Union Carbide's Linde Division where she contributed to testing programs for burner systems used in constructing U.S. Navy carriers.  She also volunteered at Camp Shiloh helping inner-city children.

In 1974, Elise moved to Alamogordo, NM where she devoted 25 years to teaching 7th grade math at Chaparral Junior High.  She also coached the Math Counts team, guiding them to district victories and state-level competitions.  Later, she continued her educational journey at NMSU teaching and tutoring developmental math courses for over seven years.  Elise worked closely with blind and deaf students, developing inclusive ways to present mathematical concepts and became affectionately known as the "math and science division go-fer."

Elise met the love of her life, Joe Haley, and they were married in June 1984.  She remained active in learning throughout her life, taking courses in history and art and exploring her creative side through photography and crafts.

In 2009, Elise was recognized as an Alamogordo Woman of Merit, a well-earned tribute to her dedication and community spirit.  A gifted photographer, her award-winning work was featured at the Otero County Fair, Southern New Mexico State Fair, and the Hubbard Museum of the American West.  Her photos were published in the New Mexico Centennial calendaNr, NMSU-A 60th Anniversary Calendar, and they are proudly displayed in the NMSU-A Science building and library.

A lover of music and performance, Elise sang with the NMSU-A University Singers especially known for her clever parody songs -- including a crowd favorite, "All I want for Christmas is My New False Teeth."

Elise's community involvement was extensive.  She was a member of the Central Church of Christ where she enjoyed fellowship, especially playing "42" with fellow members.  She was also active in numerous organizations including the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa lota (serving as Beta State photographer), OCAER (Otero County Association of Education Retirees), Eagle Forum and served as a volunteer photographer for many local schools and groups.

Beyond teaching and photography, Elise had a heart for giving.  She delighted in sharing handmade craft items--particularly plastic canvas bookmarks and crosses--bringing smiles to countless faces with her box of giveaways she carried everywhere.

Elise is survived by her brother-in-law, Charles Matthew Haley (Francine), nephew Scott Haley (Crystal), niece, Shanna McBane (Brian), chosen grandson Aaron Hunt (Angela) and chosen grandchildren, Alyssa, Logan, and Nathan.

Elise lived a life of service, love and laugher.   She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Arthur Smith, mother, Elise Margueritte Smith, and husband, Joe David Haley.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday August 28, 2025,  Alamogordo Funeral Home, 2301 First Street.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Friday August 29, 2025 at  Alamogordo Funeral Home with Shane Gabbert officiating.

Burial will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Michael Sheek, Ethan Hays, Paiten Hays, James Lovingier, Dallas Hicks and John Inetainbor.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the Otero County Animal Shelter.

The Haley family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services.
