Edna Wood Obituary

Edna E. Dove Wood was 84 when she passed away peacefully at her home in Alamogordo, New Mexico, January 12, 2021, surrounded by all of her children.

Edna was born January 31, 1936 in Dierks, AR to Robert John and Mary Dove. Shortly after she was born, her family moved to the Mayhill area where she remained most of her young life. She graduated from Cloudcroft High School in 1953 and attended Texas Western University in El Paso until she married her sweetheart, Carrol J. Wood on November 6, 1954. In 1955 their twin boys were born in Corpus Christi, Texas where her husband was stationed while in the Navy.  In 1956, she and Carrol moved back to the family ranch near Cloudcroft where two additional daughters were born and where they raised their growing family. She remained in the Cloudcroft/Mayhill area her entire life, watching her children, grandchildren,  great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild grow. Edna was employed with Otero County Electric Coop for 32 years, retiring in 1998.  She was active in the Sacramento Mountain Historical Society and her quilting club after she retired. She was a lifelong member of the Mayhill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carrol to whom she was married to for 60 years, her sister Mary Edith Posey, and her grandson Jedidiah Wood.
She is survived by her four children, Jesse Wood and his wife Carol, James Wood and his wife Susan, Kathy (Wood) Grant, and Cynthia (Wood) Buttram and her husband Terry; one niece, Laverne Jordan; one nephew, Chet Wood; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Her 17th great-grandchild is expected in May.

Honorary Pallbearers to be recognized are John Bookout, Reuben Bookout, Riley Patterson, Michele Anthony, Erik Buttram, Charlotte Wood, Jason Wood, and Martin Chabot.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions a small gravesite service was held on January 16 at Mountain Acres Cemetery in Mayhill, NM.
