David Jewett Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of David R. Jewett on January 15, 2025, at home in Carrizozo, New Mexico surrounded by his wife and his children.  He was born November 20, 1933, at home in Berkshire, New York.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Junius and Helen Jewett; his brother, Orin Jewett; and his sister, Lillian “Chat” Jewett.

Dave is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Louise Jewett (Ormsby); his daughter, Shawn Marie Jewett; his son, Mathew David Jewett (Gail); his cousin, Toni Freeman; grandchildren, Maximillan (Shawn), Dillon (Shawn), Emilia (Mathew), Mathew (Mathew), Liam (Mathew); plus his beloved brother-in-law and his beloved sisters-in-law as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dave graduated from Newark Valley High School in Newark Valley, New York in the class of 1951.  Dave then joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served our country in the Philippines until 1954.  Dave then went to the State University of New York Teachers College at Cortland earning a degree of Bachelor of Science and a degree of Master of Science in Education.  Dave taught 8th grade General Science at Vestal Central Schools from 1959 until 1989.

Dave served as a volunteer fireman and the fire department treasurer for the Richford Volunteer Fire Department.

Always with a smile on his face, Dave was often found helping his friends and neighbors by fixing a car or fixing plumbing issues - whatever they needed.  Dave loved to swim, water ski, cross country ski, golf, bowl, hunt and fish.

Summing up Dave’s long and wonderful life of 91 years in just a few paragraphs is impossible.  Those that knew him knew what they meant to him, and he knew what he meant to them as well.

It was Dave’s wish not to have any services.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in David’s name to the American Cancer Society.
